What Is Chronic Inflammation?

Inflammation is a complex system in our bodies that occurs in two main ways. It can be a response to an external injury such as a bruised knee or a paper cut. In this case, you will notice redness, swelling, pain, etc. Once all the cells from the inflammatory response have done what they were supposed to, and the injury heals, and inflammation disappears. On the other hand, the second kind of inflammation, namely chronic inflammation, is the one with significant problems. It can occur if the immune system fails to fight off an infection or if it finds itself in a confusing situation. Inflammation can also happen when the immune system senses that something is not right.

For example, this can be the case with LDL cholesterol when high levels of cholesterol make its way into the lining of an artery. More white blood cells are produced, which, instead of fixing the problem, inadvertently make it worse by making the plaque unstable and more likely to rupture.

What Are The Most Common Symptoms Of Chronic Inflammation?

Here are the top 5 indications of a chronic inflammatory condition:

1. Skin Rashes

Eczema, psoriasis, and other skin rashes are common inflammatory skin conditions. They are characterized by red, flaky, and rough skin. Both eczema and psoriasis are linked to the hypersensitivity of the immune system. Individuals with these conditions are more likely to have a more significant number of inflammatory mast cells which, when activated, trigger the skin rashes to surface.

2. Digestive Issues

Inflammation can cause digestion problems with symptoms such as bloating, abdominal pain, constipation, and loose stool. Chronic inflammation throughout the body can contribute to leaky gut syndrome or intestinal permeability. A leaky gut can further increase ongoing systemic inflammation and contribute to digestive symptoms such as abdominal distention and irregular bowel movements.

3. Lack Of Energy

Constantly feeling fatigued despite getting adequate sleep every night is yet another sign that your body is fighting off chronic inflammation. When you are chronically inflamed, your immune system remains active and continues to work overtime to regulate its response, just like when you feel run-down when you are sick. Chronic inflammation, in turn, increases the requirement of cellular energy and ensures the rapid regeneration of immune cells, further depleting you of the fuel that you need to feel fully energized.

4. Body Pain

Body pain, such as muscle aches, joint pain, and so on, are commonly caused by increased systemic inflammation. When inflammatory cytokines levels increase in the body, they can attack muscles and joints, which can result in redness, swelling, and pain.

5. Excessive Mucus Production

If you find yourself needing to clear your throat or blow your nose quite often, you might be inflamed. When you have inflammation, your mucous membranes produce thick phlegm in an attempt to protect epithelial cells in the lining of the respiratory system, resulting in coughing, sneezing, as well as a runny nose.

Ultimately, prevention is better than a cure. So, take note if you have any symptoms that seem consistent with inflammation,  contact a physician, and do your best to adopt an anti-inflammatory diet and lifestyle.
