Dyspareunia is a disorder of pain after or during sexual intercourse. Although this problem mainly affects women, it can also affect men. Women with Dyspareunia have pain in the vagina, clitoris, or the labia. This pain is experienced during penetration. In men, it may be a recurrent or persistent genital or pelvic pain that comes with sexual activity.

What are the symptoms of Dyspareunia?

  • Although Dyspareunia is usually known as the pain that is experienced during or after intercourse, the disorder may have other prominent symptoms such as   Pain during penetration

  • Unprecedented pain during coitus

If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, it is encouraged that you visit a medical professional or practitioner Causes of Dyspareunia

There are numerous recognized causes of Dyspareunia; each individual's reasons may be different due to different habits or activities during sexual intercourse. Some of them are:

  • Vaginal dryness
  • Side effects of drugs and prescription medication
  • An allergic reaction to clothing, spermicides or douches
  • Inflammation of the area surrounding the vaginal opening called vulvar vestibulitis
  • Skin diseases like lichen planus and lichen sclerosis, which adversely affects the vaginal area
  • Urinary tract infections
  • Vaginal yeast infections
  • Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs)
  • A psychological drama, often stemming from a history of sexual abuse or trauma
  • Forceful thrusting without lubrication

Dyspareunia in women

  • There are many reasons why women may be affected by Dyspareunia; below is a list of reasons why you may be feeling pain during intercourse. Genital herpes, chlamydia or gonorrhoea
  • Fluctuating levels of hormones during menopause, which can lead to several vaginal disorders on its own
  • Vaginismus, wherein the vaginal muscles contract and close up, making penetration difficult or painful
  • Internal genital irritation that is possibly caused by an allergy to contraceptives such as latex condoms or spermicides, or an allergy to certain soaps or shampoos
  • Being insufficiently sexually aroused, which results in insufficient vaginal lubrication that can make sex painful and uncomfortable
  • Certain medications that can dampen sexual desire or mood, including sedatives, contraceptive pills or antidepressants
  • Injury due to surgery near the pelvic area, female circumcision or an episiotomy
  • Stress can be, perhaps, one of the biggest causes of sexual discomfort because increased cortisol levels in the brain can restrict vaginal lubrication from getting secreted, making penetration unduly painful
  • Congenital abnormalities - Deformed vagina or the presence of a membrane that covers the entrance to the vagina

Dyspareunia in men

Men can also feel pain during or after sex. Some of the causes are:

  • A tight and inflexible foreskin
  • Little tears in the foreskin
  • Inflammation of the prostate gland, a condition that is commonly known as prostatitis
