Endorphins are tiny neurochemicals that are released by your body after you engage in certain activities. The release of endorphins in your bloodstream usually causes you to experience a certain 'high' which makes you feel good, relaxed and positive. The word endorphin comes from putting together the words 'endogenous' and 'morphine'. Endorphins consist of a certain group of peptides that are produced by the central nervous system of the body. The pituitary gland also produces them. Endorphins are released to counteract the effect of stress or pain, but they are also released during other activities like eating, exercise or sexual intercourse. Endorphins are directly involved in our natural reward circuits and are related to crucial activities that we perform as humans. These activities include eating, drinking, and maintaining physical fitness through moderate to extreme physical exercise and sexual intercourse. Endorphins also surge during pregnancy of a woman. They act to reduce discomfort or pain and make sure that pleasure experienced by the body is maximized. The release of endorphins in the body has been linked to the alleviation of depression, reduction in stress and anxiety, boost in self-esteem, drop in the overall weight, and increased body's ability to deal with the pain that is associated with childbirth.
