TrkB or commonly known as Tropomyosin receptor kinase B acts as a receptor for Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF), it is also known as tyrosine receptor kinase B or BDNF/NT-3 growth factors receptor.
Tropomyosin receptor kinase B or TrkB act as a catalytic receptor for various neurotrophins that are smaller proteins responsible for the differentiation and survival of certain cells. BDNF (Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor), neurotrophin-4, and neurotrophin-3 are the neurotrophins responsible for activating TrkB. TrkB act as a mediator for these neurotrophic factors and regulates the survival and differentiation of neurons. Recent research has shown that the activated TrkB receptor regulates the KCC2 chloride transporter in the cells.
TrkB belongs to the family of tyrosine kinases, a type of enzyme strong enough to add phosphates to target the substrates or the proteins. It is located in the cellular membrane and activates by the binding of ligands. Insulin receptors, MuSK proteins, and VEGF (Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor) receptors are common examples of tyrosine kinase receptors.
TrkB plays an important role in dealing with cancer after identifying NTRK1, NTRK2, and NTRK3. Many clinical trials are going on, showing promising results in dealing with human tumors.
