It is a common type of spirochete that is very thin, and their size ranges between 0.1-0.5 micrometers by 5.0-20.0 micrometers. It is non-capsuled, motile, and spiral in shape. These species can be microaerophilic or anaerobic. It is commonly of three types and that are Borreliaburgdorferi, Borreliagarinii, and Borreliaafzelii, responsible for Lyme disease. The common species of Borrelia consist of 930+/-20kbp. BorreliaGarinii consists of a total of 969 genes, out of which 931 are protein-coding genes. Similar to other species of Borreliait also contains linear and circular plasmids. The linear plasmids are very rare to find and are only found in Streptomyces dividends and Argobacteriumturnefaciens. The ends of these linear plasmids are in t6he form of closed loops. The linear plasmids range between 10-180kb approximately, while on the other hand, circular plasmids are between 8-40kb approximately. Similar to all other spirochetes that are responsible for causing Lyme disease, BorreliaGarinii is also secured by an inner and outer membrane. It also consists of flagella, which is situated in between the inner and outer membrane, and these are unique because they are exposed to the host’s tissue or antibodies. The outer membrane also consists of several genes that are found in plasmids.
